Jack's appointments

Jack had a follow up eye appointment earlier this week. Just a routine check in to watch his intermittent extropia. Honestly, we hardly see it anymore. Not sure if it is because it is getting better (happening less often) or if we are just so use to it. The Dr. tested his eye sight - he clearly has 20/20 vision in his right eye and we believe also in his left. By the time they tested the left eye and got to the 20 line, his attention span was shot and was just saying stuff to say stuff, but he did get a couple right after we took a break and went back to it, so they believe it is 20/20... which is a great thing. His depth perception seems to be good as well. There are 2 tests for that. One he got, the other one not so much but it is above his age level so it isn't surprising he didn't get it. The eye alignment seems to just be in his left eye, not in his right eye. The issue with the eye alignment is that if it doesn't get better, it could affect depth perception and eye sight, but since his depth perception and eye sight are good, we're still okay (i.e. no immediate need for eye surgery). The Dr. wants us to try patching his right eye (to strengthen the left eye). We tried this about 2 years ago but he'd just rip off the patch. So now we're going to try telling him he has to wear the patch if he wants to watch an episode of Thomas or Curious George. We'll see how that goes (I don't have high expectations). But over all, his eyes are still okay and the Dr. doesn't need to see us for another 4 months.

Jack also had a follow up appointment with the GI doctor (to track his weight). He is now 29.8 pounds and 36.75 inches tall. Since the GI has been following Jack, he had been gaining about a pound a month, but he lost a couple pounds when he was
throwing up sick earlier this month, so we were worried that would set us back. Although his weight gain is slight since his last appointment, if you consider the weight he lost either this month, he is doing okay. He is gaining about 8 grams per day, which is in the normal range. He is in the 25% for weight and 6 to 7% for height (up from the 3%, so that is good). He continues to take two medications (one is an appetite enhancer and the other is for acid reflux; which we're not 100% sure he really has but it doesn't hurt him and it may help with the draining of fluid in his ears, so we're sticking with it). He has days here and there where he won't eat a meal, but over all, he is eating more consistent. However, it is a circus during meal time. He is usually playing (won't eat if he isn't playing) with constant reminders from us to take bites or we have to feed him (even though he can self feed without a problem). So the GI doctor recommended Occupational Therapy to change his eating habits. We're now waiting to see if insurance covers it (and considering I work for the health care insurance company.... I'm not holding my breath that it will be covered!).

  1. Wow - Jack weighs more than Owen now! Way to go Jack!! I have to say though, I find it hard to believe there is actually OT for eating habits. Owen often has to be reminded to take bites or be fed (unless the food in question is a real fav like broccoli or cookies!) but I never thought to worry about it. I just figure he'll always be on the thin side, and as someone who's always been on the not-so-thin side, I don't see the problem (as long of course as his doc says he looks healthy, which has always been the case). So anyway - hoping you get coverage if that's what you want to pursue, but very proud of Jack either way!!
