Murphy

Way back in the mid-90's, my in-laws...actually back then in was my boyfriend's parents - not even my in-laws, got 2 ragdoll cats - Charlie and Simba. I just fell in love with them. So much so, that for Christmas in 1997, Scott got me Murphy and Payton as a gift. They were my fur babies. Even through my allergies, I had those cats with me all the time. Murphy sleeps with us, greets us at the door, sits on our laps, sits on the kitchen chairs during meal times. Murphy is the cat that will lay in the middle of the floor no matter what is going on. At Halloween, kids will return to our door with their friends/parents just to show people Murphy. He is gorgeous, long hair and big (20lbs). Our home is Murphy's home and we just live in it with him.

We lost Payton to FIP (cat's version of AIDs) when he was 2 years old. Murphy and I were depressed so we got Bixby. And through the years, we inherited Charlie. That is how we became a household of 3 cats.

Two and a half years ago, we lost Charlie to kidney failure. It was quick but still painful for us. We still miss Charlie's presence and Jack still talks about Charlie.

A couple weeks ago, we noticed the water dish being empty more often. Last week we noticed Murphy drinking a ton more water, tracking litter more, sleeping in the shower (instead of just outside the shower), not coming around us all the time. Last weekend his mane was sopping wet - all the time and loosing clumps of fur.

Today Scott took Murphy into the vet. An initial blood screening seems to rule out diabetes. They did an xray and senior cat blood panel. We were told they hope there is an infection in the kidney that is compounding the problem, so he is going on antibiotics. What we aren't talking about, is if it is kidney failure... is that "the problem" that could be compounded?
We'll know results later this week.

  1. Oh Susan - my heart is hurting for you. We are going through the same thing right now with Remy. She has been diagnosed with pancreatitis, and her kidney levels are not right. She was on antibiodics but didn't clear the infection in her urine sample, so yesterday she was back in for an ultrasound and more blood/urine cultures. We are hoping and praying that the infection is what is causing her kidney levels too. I so hope that both of our fur babies come through this ok!!
