Hole in the Couch

At Brooke's school, she naps separate from the kids because she doesn't always fall asleep. And if she doesn't, she'll keep the other kids up, so she is separated. Last Friday, when she went down for her nap, her teacher saw her using her hair clip to poke at the new leather couch. The teacher told Brooke not to and to go to sleep. But Brooke decided she still wanted to continue... and did so until she poked a hand size hole into the couch and pulled out the stuffing.

Words don't even being to describe our disappointment. Probably because this isn't the first time she has done something like this.... her lady bug pillow pet was taken away because she poked a hole in one of its black dots, the cellophane wrapping for gift we had for an uncle was ripped apart, puzzle pieces have been throw out because of either chewing or pulled off of the picture, those squeeze stress relief tchotchke (that I've gotten from work) have been pulled apart. Every time, the item is taken away or thrown out (too badly damaged) and here has been a punishment associated with it, but clearly nothing got through. And now it is someone else's property.

So after pick up, we had Jack's baseball practice, where she sat on the grass the entire 1.5 hours being mentally tortured as Scott and I discussed punishment. In the end, we decided that she looses all her toys for a week and is grounded for the weekend. When we got home that evening, she packed up every toy, stuffed animal, dress up dress and book in her room. On Saturday, she spent all day on the stairs. Scott was watching college football and since she was grounded, she couldn't watch TV. But she also wasn't trusted upstairs by herself, so she had to stay on the stairs where Scott could see her, but where she couldn't see the TV. She wasn't able to go to Jack's jiu-jitsu class, her gymnastics class, the Lowe's build it yourself workshop, lunch out with Mommy or running errands. And to top it off, she couldn't go to the Halloween party Saturday night.

But sneaky girl... when it was time for a shower, she showered herself in our room and instead of brushing her hair, got into the Halloween face paint that I had out and decorated her face. When asked why she did that, her answer was she knew we'd say "no". She clearly knows right from wrong but instead of asking and knowing she'd be told "no", she goes ahead and does it anyway without asking.

We've had talks with her this weekend about thinking through her actions, knowing right from wrong, doing what is "right" even if it isn't what she wants to do, following directions from Mommy, Daddy and teacher even if it isn't want she likes. I honestly don't think taking away her toys has any impact on her. But hopefully something about this past weekend sinks in and she has learned her lesson.
