4th of July 2012

The neighborhood across one of the main roads to our community is called Painted Trails. They do a parade and party at the park for Fourth of July. We are lucky enough to have great friends who live there, who invite us to spend the holiday with them. This neighborhood feeds into Jack's school, so throughout the day, we ran into more and more friends from Jack's kindergarten class, as well as team mates from the kids' soccer team.

We decorated the bikes and then watched the kids ride around in the parade (that would be Jack in the blue shirt and red helmet in the front of the parade). At the park, we found our "common ground area," provided the parameters (don't go with strangers, stay within this area, etc.) and then let the kids run off. Brooke mostly bounced from one bounce house to another. Jack was Mr. Social running around with his friend Brady, talking with various other friends, doing activities (cookie contest, limbo, etc.). It was one of those parental moments that I tried to appreciate -- Jack growing up and being big enough to do this own thing at a function like this.... not being tied to my side, having the flexibility to go and do what he wanted (within reason, of course). But it was also a bit sad for me to have one of my babies be so big already.

And since I was a party pooper and didn't want to stay out and stay up late for fireworks on a work night, we did fireworks in front of our house at dusk (with the kids in the PJs). The kids (and I think Scott to a minor extent) enjoyed setting off their own fireworks and watch them pop.
